The Bandai Pippin is an interesting collaboration between Apple™ and Bandia corporations. Aesthetically it’s a beautiful system and quite unique. It was released in anticipation of the need for home computation systems and a vehicle for using the Internet. Needless to say this system did not fare well. Many people feel this is because the price of home computers dropped drastically and circumvented the need of a game console. Most people have no knowledge that this system was ever released in the first place. It’s sad because it really is a nice system. I thought that the joystick was one of the better-designed joysticks and that it had great potential. The price tag ($600.00) was a little too steep resulting in poor sales and thus the system sank like a rock soon after it was released.
There are essentially two versions that you will find to purchase, a Japanese model (white version) and the English model (black version). The American black version is rare compared to the white version. There are Japanese black versions, but I suspect that these were systems that never made it to the United States to be sold. The software for the system is very difficult to find and is a limiting factor if you are considering buying one of these systems. I have bought a few of these systems in anticipation of it perhaps becoming a sought after collectable. It’s a gamble. I will either make some extra cash from buying these systems while the price is fairly reasonable, or I will have a fairly heavy paperweight to stare at.
Limited Editions: NONE
Only buy if you’re a collector. It’s a rare entry of APPLE to get into the video game industry and is unique.
